Enterprise Payroll & Systems Support Specialist

Remote – U.S. Based
$125,000 – $175,000

Overview

A fast-growing payroll and workforce technology company is seeking an Enterprise Payroll & Systems Support Specialist to work with some of its largest and most complex clients.

This is not traditional customer service, basic payroll support, or a software development role. These clients are large, sophisticated organizations with complex payroll structures, unique pay rules, multiple departments and entities, and highly configured systems. When they reach out, the questions usually aren’t simple—they need someone who can dig in, understand how the pieces connect, and figure out what’s really happening.

The right candidate combines strong systems thinking, payroll knowledge, and problem-solving ability with strong client skills. You don’t need to be a programmer or developer. We’re looking for someone who understands complex systems from the business and user side, is comfortable working through data and configuration issues, and has the curiosity to keep digging until the problem makes sense.

You’ll become deeply familiar with a dedicated group of enterprise clients and their unique setups, allowing you to solve problems with context instead of treating every request like another ticket. Some issues can turn into larger projects spanning weeks or even months.

For someone who loves complex payroll, systems, data, and figuring things out, this is an opportunity to become a true expert while working with sophisticated clients at a rapidly growing company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary support resource for a portfolio of large enterprise clients
  • Develop a deep understanding of each client’s payroll structure, system configuration, workflows, and business rules
  • Troubleshoot complex payroll, configuration, data, and system-related issues
  • Dig beyond the immediate question to understand the root cause and how a change may impact other areas of the system
  • Own client issues from initial request through resolution
  • Work directly with clients on complex requests, system changes, and longer-term projects
  • Handle advanced support through email, phone, and ongoing client communication
  • Coordinate with Payroll, Tax, Product, Engineering, Finance, and other internal experts when additional expertise is needed
  • Monitor open issues and ensure clients receive consistent follow-up
  • Identify recurring problems and opportunities to improve processes and prevent future issues
  • Assist with testing, troubleshooting, data updates, and advanced system support
  • Over time, become a trusted internal resource and escalation point for other members of the support organization

Ideal Candidate

We’re looking for someone who is sharp, analytical, curious, and naturally good at figuring things out.

This person should have:

  • Strong experience with payroll and/or complex HCM, HRIS, workforce management, or enterprise business systems
  • Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills
  • Strong systems thinking with the ability to understand how different configurations, rules, workflows, and data connect
  • Comfort working with large amounts of data and investigating discrepancies
  • Ability to understand a complex software platform from the business and user side, rather than as a programmer
  • Strong client-facing communication skills with the ability to explain complicated issues clearly and professionally
  • A high level of ownership, judgment, and follow-through
  • Ability to manage multiple complex issues without losing track of the details
  • Strong learning ability and the curiosity to understand why something works—not simply memorize how to do it
  • Ability to recognize when an issue can be solved independently and when additional expertise is needed

Relevant backgrounds may include enterprise payroll, payroll systems, HCM/HRIS administration, workforce management, payroll implementation, payroll operations, or systems-heavy payroll leadership. A Payroll Director, Workforce Management leader, or payroll-heavy Controller who has worked deeply with complex systems could also translate very well.

SQL, BI, reporting, or advanced Excel experience can be helpful, but programming is not required. This is not a software engineering, coding, or IT infrastructure role. Sol specifically distinguished SQL/BI as potentially useful while saying a heavily JavaScript/Python/development-oriented profile is generally not what he’s looking for.

Direct experience with the company’s specific platform is not required. The company has a strong training infrastructure and is prepared to teach the right person. What matters most is finding someone with the systems aptitude, payroll understanding, problem-solving ability, and client presence to learn quickly and become highly proficient.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys being challenged, wants to become an expert in a sophisticated payroll platform, and likes being the person clients and colleagues turn to when the answer isn’t obvious.
